Gilmer Federal Correctional Institution

Located on a 300 acre lot, Gilmer Federal Correctional Institution is a medium security institution with a minimum security satellite camp.  The facilities are located in Glenville of Gilmer County, West Virginia. 55 acres of the facility is secured by a perimeter fence.  The FCI has 3 housing units while the prison camp has just 1 housing unit. The prison holds male offenders.  Currently, the FCI houses 1,353 inmates and the camp houses 111 prisoners.  The FCI holds prisoners who have medium security designations and the camp holds prisoners who only need to be placed under minimum security.

FCI Gilmer offers dental, medical, mental, health, and social services to all prisoners upon their arrival.  In addition, the prison has educational opportunities and programs available to their offenders.  Educational programs include Adult Continuing Education, General Education Development, and the National Federation of Professional Trainers Certification Program.  Other programs include parenting programs and religious, wellness, and recreational activities.  UNICOR employs about 120 inmates from both the FCI and Camp.  Through UNICOR, prisoners are able to work under product lines such as fabrication, mechanical remanufacturing, and more.

In 2010, a reported riot took place on September 23 at the FCI.  During the riot, a gang consisting of 100 members unexpectedly attacked another group of 20 gang members. The gang members who were being attacked were just recently transferred to the facility.  Prisoners used horseshoes, rocks, boots, and their fists as weapons to attack each other.  Even a correctional officer was hit in the face with a rock during the riot.  5 inmates were hospitalized.  Reports said that one inmate was struck in the eye with a broom handle and another was beaten repeatedly with a horseshoe, both causing life threatening injuries.  Officers had to use tear gas to control the violence.  As a result of the riot, the facility was placed under lockdown.
