Huntsville Unit
Huntsville Unit is a medium custody prison located in Walker County Texas. The facility, which opened in 1849, is sometimes referred to as "Walls Unit" due to the large brick wall that surrounds the building. Huntsville Unit has the distinction of being the facility which houses the execution chamber in the State of Texas. All inmates who have been sentenced to death, whether male or female, will eventually serve their last day at Huntsville Unit. Death row inmates are not housed at Huntsville. They are however, transported to Huntsville Unit the afternoon of their execution and eventually enter the nine foot by twelve foot execution chamber, strapped to a gurney and executed.
Huntsville Unit has a maximum capacity of 1,705 male offenders. Inmates range in custody level from G-1 minimum to G-3 medium security levels. Additionally, this facility houses offenders who are classified as transient, or staying a short period of time. Inmates at Huntsville Unit can work a variety of jobs within the facility and on institutional grounds. These jobs include working in a textile mill, producing garments, and working in the mechanical department providing mechanical repairs, welding and machining. Select inmates at Huntsville Unit are allowed to work in the Texas prisoner cemetery providing landscaping and maintenance services.
Inmates incarcerated at Huntsville Unit are provided educational programs that include literacy courses, adult basic education classes and the opportunity to earn a GED. Vocational studies include automotive mechanics I and II, culinary arts, imaging technologies, and business image management. Additional programs are available for inmates nearing their discharge date and include pre-release programming and job skills/employment preparation. Substance abuse treatment and Sex offender education programs are also available at Huntsville Unit.
Visiting Hours at Huntsville Unit:
The Huntsville Unit in Texas holds visitation for inmates on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm. Visits are two hours in duration and can be contact or non-contact. Visitors are allowed to enter the unit with only their Driver's License, car key and up to twenty dollars in quarters contained in a clear Ziploc bag to use in the vending machines.
