George Beto Unit
George Beto Unit is a maximum security prison located in Anderson County Texas. Beto Unit houses approximately 3,471 inmates (3,150 in the unit and 321 in the trust camp). The facility is located on over 20,500 acres with several other institutions including Gurney, Michael, Coffield and Powledge units. Beto Unit has a reputation of being a hardcore prison, and is often referred to as a prison for 'gladiators' as inmates there usually fight because they like to or because they have to. The majority of offenders are young and range from twenty to thirty years old. Inmates are housed in wings which include A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, P, T, U, O and X. F wing houses gang members, X wing houses solitary and segregation inmates, and O wing houses transient offenders.
Inmates incarcerated in Beto Unit can receive literacy courses, adult basic education, GED, and ESL classes. Additional vocational courses are provided to teach offenders a new skill in milling/cabinetmaking, masonry, carpentry, plumbing, welding, computers, drafting, electrical trades, and electronics repair. Inmates are encouraged to participate in substance abuse education, parenting and life skill courses, and support groups. Beto Unit provides a sex offender treatment program (referred to as SOTP) for all inmates who have been convicted of a sexual crime.
Inmates can work within the institution in a metal sign manufacturing plant, in facility maintenance, laundry, in cattle production, pig farming, poultry egg operation, feed and grain storage, meat processing plant, and in gardens that produce edible crops.
