California State Prison in Los Angeles County serves as both a long term facility for convicted felons, and as a Reception Center for inmates who need to go through the intake process.  Inmates in the reception center are usually housed for only a short term until they are classified and relocated.  This facility houses over 4,000 minimum to maximum security inmates.

Internal jobs at California Prison LA County include working in the laundry department/kitchen.  Inmates can also take vocational courses to learn cabinet making, carpentry skills, office and computer related skills, plumbing, and custodial skills.  Education opportunities for inmates to earn both a basic adult education and a GED are available.  The facility also runs a literacy program to help inmates who may not be able to read.  This facility also offers maintenance to the surrounding communities through community service crews.
