Central Prison

Central Prison is located in Raleigh North Carolina.  It is a close custody facility, which is the highest custody level of North Carolina prisons.  Close custody means inmates are closely watched, have high restrictions in their movement, and are under constant armed supervision.  Offenders at Central Prison have committed very serious crimes, or present a serious risk to management and refuse to follow rules.  Currently Central Prison houses 752 adult male offenders, who are secured by two razor ribbon wire fences.

Inmates at Central Prison can work in over 260 job assignments including culinary services, barbering, custodial and building maintenance, clerical and laundry.  Offenders can also participate in substance abuse treatment and group therapies.  Additional services are provided through the Chaplains office and offer biblical studies and religious worship services.

Visiting Hours at Central Prison:

All visitation at Central Prison is non-contact and by appointment only.  Appointments for visitation must be scheduled at least one week in advance.  You can schedule your visitation appointment by calling (919)-743-4170.  A maximum of two adults and one child, or one adult and two children are allowed per visiting session.  The visiting schedule is as follows:

  • Unit 1 has visitation on:
    • Wednesdays from 9:30am-10:30am and 1:30pm-2:30pm
  • Unit 2 has visitation on:
    • Wednesdays from 9:30am-10:30am and 1:30pm-2:30pm
  • Unit 3 (Death Row Inmates) have visitation on:
    • Fridays from 8:30am-10:30am, and from 1:30pm-3:30pm​
  • Unit 5 has visitation on:
    • Sundays from 8:30am-10:30am and from 1:30pm-3:30pm
  • Legal visitation for all units occurs on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 8:30am-10:30am, and 1:30am-4:45pm
  • ​Unit 4 (Hospital) and Unit 6 (Mental Health) have visits on:​
    • Saturdays from 8:30am-10:30am and 1:30pm-3:30pm
    • Sundays from 8:30am-10:30am and 1:30pm-3:30pm
    • Wednesdays from 9:30am-10:30am and 1:30pm-2:30pm
    • Fridays from 8:30am-10:30am and 1:30pm-3:30pm
  • Unit 4 and Unit 6 have legal visits on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 8:30am-10:30am and 1:30pm-4:45pm
