Edgefield Federal Correctional Institution

Edgefield Federal Correctional Institution is a medium security federal prison located in Edgefield, South Carolina.  Edgefield does not only have a FCI, but it also has a minimum security prison camp available.  The Camp and the FCI both hold male prisoners, together currently holding 1,830 inmates.  FCI Edgefield was originally designed to hold 2,048 offenders between the camp and the FCI.  The recommended capacity of the Camp is 512 inmates while the FCI can hold around 1536 inmates.  Edgefield Federal Correctional Institution has three housing units for the prisoners and the Camp has four housing units to provide the inmates with.  Edgefield houses male inmates who are sentenced to a medium custody environment.  The Camp houses inmates who are either sentenced with minimum custody or out and community custody prisons.  The housing design of the facility was designed specifically to prevent sexual harassment throughout the facility to the best of the authority's ability.

Edgefield Correctional provides inmates with several different programs that prepare offenders for life on the outside as a productive citizen.  Inmates are offered educational courses such as Adult Continuing Education, General Education Development, Adult Occupational Education, and English as a Second Language.  The facilities also offer a Parenting Program, Residential Drug Abuse Program, and a Work Keys Program.  Vocational courses and training in auto repair, computer skills, and culinary arts are available as well.  Prisoners at Edgefield are also involved in several community service projects, along with being employed in the manufacturing of textiles.  To the convenience of the inmates, Edgefield Federal Correctional Institution offers dental, mental, health, medical, and social services.

At FCI Edgefield, there have been several issues involving corruption within the penitentiary.  For example, in 2002 a corrections officer was sentenced to a 3 year incarceration, along with a 7 year supervision upon release after the correctional officer took over $9,000 in bribes from inmates at the institution.  It is believed that this particular officer took on bribes from prisoners and promised in return to distribute marijuana to the inmates. Again in 2010, two guards were also punished for taking bribes from prisoners.  The officers, Gregory Conyers and Antonio Heath, accepted bribes from inmate Boyce Tisdale.  In exchange for the money, the officers were agreeing to smuggle contraband into the institution.  As a result of this, the officers were sentenced to prison, along with Tisdale being transferred to Butner Federal Correctional Complex.

Edgefield has housed several notable inmates.  Christopher Coke, a drug kingpin, currently serves his sentence at Edgefield Federal Correctional Institution.  Coke was the leader of the Shower Posse, which was a violent drug gang based out of Jamaica.  Coke was extradited to the United States after a 3 day search, where 74 people were killed.  Coke pleaded guilty to smuggling large amounts of cocaine into the United States and was sentenced to FCI Edgefield for 23 years.  Coke is due to be released in 2030.
