Fairton Federal Correctional Institution

Opened in 1990, Fairton Federal Correctional Institution is a prison located on 250 acres of land in Fairton, New Jersey.  FCI Fairton, which is part of Cumberland County, is composed of a medium security institution, a minimum security satellite camp, and a detention center.  A total of 1,213 prisoners are incarcerated at Fairton.  Of these inmates, 115 stay at the camp, while the other 1,098 are placed in the institution and the detention center.  Fairton Federal Correctional Institution only houses male offenders.  There are 4 main housing units.  These housing units can hold up to 310 inmates each.  Because of the decline in inmate population, many of the six-person and eight-person cells have either been removed or left empty.  Although there are many multi-person cells, there are also individual cells available in the housing units.  Showers are located and shared between units.  The housing wing also consists of a telephone room, a laundry room, and an inmate common area.  Separate housing units are also provided for offenders who require disciplinary isolation.  The prison camp has an open dormitory style with double bunks for the inmates housed there.

Fairton Federal Correctional Institution works to encourage offenders to strive for self improvement, which is achieved through numerous programs.  To help inmates who have struggled with substance abuse, the facility offers a 500 hour residential drug abuse program.  The Education Department works with inmates to help them with their academics.  Educational opportunities at Fairton Correctional include the GED Program, literacy classes, ESL classes, vocational training and more.  Inmates can receive vocational training and apprenticeships.  Apprenticeships include dry wall applicator, electrician, painter, plumber, animal trainer, landscape technician, and more.  The Vocational Training Program offers a building trades program, where once completed, inmates can participate in more advanced classes and programs.  The Education Department ensures inmates will learn skills such as resume writing, job interview preparation, finding and maintaining a job, and exploring other careers.  The Recreation Department provides activities that allow the prisoners to learn about a positive lifestyle.  Some of the activities include ceramics, leather craft, drawing, crocheting, yoga, nutrition, and more.

On August 17 2010, a chief pharmacist at the institution was convicted of stealing over $7,000 worth of drugs and supplies from the prison's pharmacy.  The investigation revealed that the theft occurred from 2008 to 2009.  Walters stole nalbuphine hydrochloride, which is a pain killer made up of opiates.  Along with the pain killer, Walters also stole hypodermic needles.  During this time, Walters was ordering a significantly larger amount of the drug than necessary so he could use the drug for himself.  Walters was sentenced to 3 years of probation on December 1, 2010, along with facing fines and having to pay the cost for the stolen materials.  In 2012, another staff member of the facility was found guilty of accepting $3,600 in bribes to smuggle contraband in and out of the prison.  The officer accepted two separate cash payments - one worth $1,100 and the other $2,500.  After investigation, it was discovered that the officer was smuggling tobacco into the facility for a prisoner, along with vitamin supplements.  The officer was sentenced to 1 year in prison.
