Florence Federal Correctional Institution

Florence Federal Correctional Institution is part of the Florence Correctional Complex.  The facility is a medium security prison with a nearby minimum security satellite camp. Located in Florence of Fremont County, Colorado, Florence Correctional opened in 1993.  The prison currently holds 1,465 inmates, with 1,1014 prisoners at the FCI and 451 prisoners at the camp.  Located on 21 acres, the FCI has four separate buildings for housing inmates.  One of the four housing units is dedicated to the Residential Drug Abuse Program.  The FPC on average houses inmates who are around 43 years of age.  Those who are incarcerated at the satellite camp typically serve around a seven year sentence, whereas those who stay at the FCI are sentenced to much longer terms.

The FCI and FPC offer programs that give prisoners the opportunity to be active during their incarceration.  As mentioned, a Residential Drug Abuse Program is offered at the FCI.  Once an offender completes the RDAP, he will be placed in a halfway house for 180 days.  If the inmate has successfully completed both steps of the program and has not been convicted of any felonies that were associated with violence, then the inmate will receive up to 12 months in sentence reduction.  The FPC offers counseling to inmates who have mental health issues or have faced traumatic experiences.  Also in attempt to assuage trauma faced by certain prisoners, the camp has a dog training program.  Each facility that is part of the Florence Federal Correctional Complex provides educational programs to the offenders.  Educational programs include the General Education Development, Adult Continuing Education, test preparation and other testing, Adult Occupational Education, English as a Second Language, parenting programs, vocational training and more.  Many different services are also offered, such as religious services and recreational services.

At FCI Florence, several notable incidents have occurred, along with the incarceration of notable prisoners.  On the morning of December 29th, 2008, officers at the facility found 33 year old inmate Pablo Zúñiga-García dead in his cell.  Zúñiga-García was serving a 54 month sentence after being convicted of illegal immigration.  After investigation, it was discovered that José Augustín Pluma, Juan Martín Ruelas, Mark Rosález, and Justin Hernández, who were all also prisoners at the FCI, caused the death.  The inmates responsible were all members of a gang, known as the Sureños gang.  Other conspirators also took part in the assault of Zúñiga-García.  Pluma, Ruelas, Rosález, and Hernández were convicted of murder and transferred to higher security institutions. Notable inmates at Florence include, Francisco Duran who is currently serving a 40 year sentence.  Duran was imprisoned after being convicted of attempting to assassinate former President Bill Clinton in 1995.  Duran fired 25-30 rounds from his assault rifle in the White House during October of 1994.  Duran is not scheduled for release until 2029.
