Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution

The Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution is made up of a low security facility and a minimum security satellite camp.  Located in Burlington County New Jersey, the prison was activated in 1992.  The facilities have a total population of 4,401 prisoners.  Although the total population is only about 4,400, the prison was designed to hold a total of 4,798 offenders.  Currently the camp has about 335 inmates, while the institution houses around 4,066 offenders.  Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution only houses male inmates.  Fort Dix is comprised of eleven housing units.  Each housing unit follows a dormitory style room setup, with the exception of the Special Housing Unit.  The dormitory rooms are designed to hold either 2, 10, or 12 men, depending on the specific dorm.  The camp only has two housing units - each of which are dormitory style.

Education and other programs are provided at both the camp and FCI.  The institution offers educational courses such as Adult Continuing Education, Adult Occupational Education, and English as a Second Language.  HiSet, a general equivalency diploma, test preparation and GED testing is also available.  Inmates are encouraged to look into vocational courses provided by this institution.  The facility offers two 500-hour drug abuse programs, more commonly known as the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP).  Once an offender complete the RDAP, he will be placed in re-entry center for 180 days.  As a reward for completing this program, inmates who have not committed violent crimes can receive up to a 12 month sentence reduction.  At Fort Dix, prisoners will also be assigned jobs throughout the facility.  Work assignments include landscaping, food services, cleaning, and more.  UNICOR employs a great handful of inmates at both the camp and institution.  The Camp assigns inmates to work with at the military base by performing janitorial services and maintenance of the lawn.  In addition, offenders participate in community service projects throughout the surrounding area.

In 2010, inmate Dimorio McDowell was found guilty of running an identity theft ring from the prison.  The investigation involved both the FBI and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.  After this discovery, 8 people who worked with McDowell and communicated with him over the phone were arrested.  The identity ring attempted to steal credit cards linked to major stores such as Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Home Depot, and more.  The companies that were victims of McDowell and the identity theft ring lost around $500,000 - $1,000,000 in total.  After McDowell pleaded guilty, he was sentenced to 14 additional years in prison and was transferred to Terre Haute FCI in Indiana.
