Joe F. Gurney Transfer Facility

Gurney Transfer Facility is a mixed custody prison that houses minimum to medium security offenders.  Located in Anderson County, the Gurney Transfer Facility is co-located with Coffield, Powledge, Beto and Michael Units on over 20,500 acres of land.  The facilities share many resources and run agricultural operations which employ inmates in raising cattle, poultry, and pigs, and in running a grain and feed mill.  Inmates also participate in growing and harvesting edible crops.

The current maximum capacity of Gurney Unit is 2,128 male offenders.  Gurney Transfer Facility is responsible for the intake and processing of offenders from the surrounding area and for housing offenders who are in transit to new facilities.  During intake inmates are given a substance abuse screening, a full criminal history is taken, and multiple medical and psychological assessments are conducted.  Based on these assessments offenders are given a classification and designated a permanent facility.

Gurney Transfer Facility provides medical, mental health and dental services to offenders.  Inmates are provided the opportunity to participate in literacy courses, adult basic education classes and GED testing.  Pre-release counseling, substance abuse education, and various support groups and religious worship services are also available to offenders.

Visiting Hours at Gurney Transfer Facility:

Gurney Transfer Facility conducts visitation on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-5pm.  Family members are allowed contact visits, friends and non-family members are restricted to non-contact visits (or visits behind glass).  All visitors must be on the inmate's approved visitors list before they can visit an inmate.  Visits are up to two hours in duration.  All visitors should contact the facility the Friday before they visit to ensure their offender is still housed at Gurney and is still eligible for visits.
