Beauford H. Jester I, III, IV Units

Beauford H. Jester Units I, III, and IV are prison facilities located in Richmond Texas.  The facilities are co-located on 933 acres of land.  Jester I unit can house a maximum of 323 male substance abuse offenders and is classified as a Substance Abuse Felony Punishment Facility.  Jester III Unit is classified as a prison and can house 810 male inmates in the main unit and an additional 321 offenders in the Trusty Camp.  Jester IV Unit is classified as a Psychiatric Facility and houses a maximum of 550 male inmates classified at a mental health custody level.  These units are named after a former Governor of Texas.

Jester IV, the Psychiatric Unit, houses some of the most mentally ill inmates, some of which are considered violent offenders.  Additionally, Jester IV Unit houses eight death row inmates.  While some of the offenders at Jester IV are housed for long periods, most of the offenders are housed for short periods of time while their behavior and mental health is stabilized, at which point they return to their original unit.

Jester III unit houses minimum custody (G-1) to medium custody (G3) inmates and provides literacy classes and adult basic education courses.  Offenders at this unit can also receive vocational training in culinary services, automotive mechanics, and business computer information systems II.  Support groups, religious worship services and activities are provided to offenders who wish to participate.  Medical, dental, and psychiatric services are provided to all offenders.

Visiting Hours at Jester I Unit:

Visitation at Jester I, III, and IV Units is conducted on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.  Visits are two hours in duration and limited to one visit per weekend.  The type of visit will depend on the inmate's internal status, which will determine if they are eligible for contact or non-contact visits.  All visitors are encouraged to contact the facility before they visit to ensure visitation has not been canceled and that their inmate is still currently located at the unit.  Any visitor who is traveling over 300 miles to attend visitation may qualify for a special visit.  Special visits allow for a longer visiting session to occur.  Contact the Wardens office for more information and to request a special visit.
