Nathaniel J. Neal Unit

Nathaniel J. Neal Unit, usually referred to as Neal Unit, is a mixed custody prison located in Armarillo Texas.  The facility houses minimum G1 and G2 offenders as well as medium high level G4 inmates.  The current capacity of Neal Unit is 1,732 male offenders.  Neal Unit is located on 592 acres of land that is shared with Clements Unit.  Inmates housed here can work in a beef processing plant, in unit maintenance, and a unit garden.  Additionally, select inmates can work in supervised projects for the Texas Department of Transportation and local government based agencies usually providing a labor force.

Inmates at Neal Unit are encouraged to take any educational programs that would benefit them.  Programs offered include carpentry, electrical trade, culinary arts, adult basic education, literacy and GED courses.  Those inmates who are incarcerated for sex based crimes may be required to participate in the Sex Offender Treatment Program (SOTP for short).  Additionally, inmates who have difficulties with drugs and alcohol should participate in substance abuse education offered at Neal Unit.  Support groups such as Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous are available, and religious and faith based programs are provided through the Chaplains office.

Visiting Hours at Neal Unit:

Neal Unit conducts visitation on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.  Inmates are only allowed one visit per weekend.  Regular visits can be as long as two hours in duration.  Some visitors have reported visitation issues that arose from wearing white shirts/tops and pants, as these clothes too closely resemble the inmate's clothing, refrain from wearing white, or bring a change of clothing to ensure your admitted into visitation.  Visitors are allowed to bring up to $20 in quarters contained in a small clear plastic bag for use in the vending machines.  Leave all other items in your car except your car key, and identification.
