South Dakota Women's Prison

South Dakota Women's Prison is located in Pierre South Dakota and is a multi custody facility that houses over 352 female offenders of maximum, medium and minimum security.  The facility is comprised of multiple law enforcement buildings and is part of the Solem Public Safety Center.  E-Unit is a minimum security unit located just outside of the perimeter fence.  An additional minimum security unit provides intensive treatment for women with methamphetamine addictions.  Inmates at South Dakota Women's Prison can participate in the correctional industries program providing data entry to various government agencies.

South Dakota Women's Prison offers mental health and substance abuse treatment as well as sex offender treatment for inmate's who committed sex offenses.  This facility also offers a Mother-Infant program which allows mothers of newborns to keep their child for 30 days during their incarceration.  This period of time allows bonding between mother and child and allows permanent placement options to be evaluated and decided. Participation in the Mother-Infant program requires completion of parenting classes.  The mother and infant are housed in an area separate from the general population.  Additional parenting programs like the P.A.C.T. program allows eligible offenders to have two of their children at a time stay with them for one weekend each month.  Inmates must apply for this program through the PACT co-odinator or their counselor.

Visiting Hours at South Dakota Women's Prison:

Visitation at South Dakota Women's Prison is based on if the offender is located at the main facility or in H-Unit.  The visiting schedule is as follows:

  • Main Facility Inmates have visits on:
    • Mondays and Fridays from 6:30pm-8:30pm
    • Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays from 1pm-4pm
  • ​H-Unit Inmates have visits on:
    • Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays from 1pm-4pm
