Young Unit

Young Medical Facility, sometimes referred to as Young Unit, is a minimum custody medical correctional facility that houses both males and female offenders.  The facility is located in Dickinson Texas (Galveston County), and first started treating offenders in 1996.  Young Unit has the capacity to house approximately 455 inmates; 314 in the main unit, and 141 in the medical facility.  Inmates located here range from G1, G2, and those who require medical treatment.  In addition, Young Medical Facility has a small population of Trustee inmates who help with the daily operations of the unit.

Young Medical Facility houses offenders in an inpatient pod style infirmary.  Female offenders are housed in three dormitories, which provide a sheltered housing unit for pregnant inmates.  Dorms A and B house female inmates who require medical attention, while dormitory C houses female workers who help with maintenance and the daily operation of the facility.

Programs at Young Unit are limited, due to the specialization of the facility and relatively short stay of most offenders.  Educational programs include literacy, adult basic education, GED courses, and the CHANGES pre-release program.  Inmates can be assigned work detail that includes facility maintenance, landscaping and other jobs that help in the daily operations of the facility.  Additional programs at Young Unit include the BAMBI program which is a mother baby bonding initiative, substance abuse education, parenting training, victim awareness, and life skills courses.

Visiting Hours for Young Medical Facility:

Inmates who are currently located at the Young Unit Medical Facility and are under general care are allowed visits on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.  Offenders who are on Hospice or classified as Critically ill are allowed visits everyday by appointment (contact the facility to schedule a visit).  All visits are contact visits.  Regular weekend visits are two hours in duration special visits and visits to those on hospice will vary, contact Young Unit directly for more information.
