Alfred D. Hughes Unit
Hughes Unit is a maximum security prison located in Gatesville Texas, part of Coryell County. The facility houses a maximum of 2,984 male inmates, who range from G-1 (minimum custody) to G-5 (maximum custody. Additionally, Hughes Unit has an administrative segregation unit and safekeeping unit. This prison opened in 1990 and is situated on 390 acres of land. Hughes Unit operates a garment factory that employs a large number of inmates in the manufacturing of various clothing worn by staff and inmates. Some offenders are selected to work in agricultural operations which include farming edible crops, caring for security horses and canines, and in a swine slaughtering operation. Furthermore, offenders can work within the facility providing janitorial and maintenance services to the institution.
Hughes Unit provides on site and out-patient medical, dental, and mental health services. Inmates are also provided educational opportunities that include literacy, adult basic education, and GED courses. Vocational programs include pipe fitting, appliance service technician, and custodial technologies. Substance abuse treatment, and support groups that include Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous are available to all offenders who suffer from addiction.
Visiting Hours for Hughes Unit:
Inmates incarcerated at Hughes Unit in Texas are allowed visits on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm. Visits can be a maximum duration of two hours. All vehicles will be inspected and searched (under the trunk and hood as well), and your vehicle will be assigned a number that you must remember. A maximum of two visitors are allowed (children under 16 do not count). A maximum of $20 per visitor is allowed but must be in quarters and contained in a clear Ziploc bag.
