John M. Wynne Unit

Wynne Unit is a medium custody prison located in Huntsville Texas, part of Walker County.  The facility opened in 1883 and opened as the current unit in 1939.  Wynne Unit houses over 2,620 inmates 2,300 in the main unit, and an additional 321 offenders in the Trusty Camp.  Offenders range in custody levels from G1 to G4.  Wynne Unit shares land and many inmate operations with the Holliday Unit.

Offenders at Wynne can work in a computer recovery facility that helps recycle electronic waste, a license plate factory, a mattress factory, and a sign and plastics facility.  Additional agricultural operations include egg laying, swine finishing, caring for and breeding horses, and working in crop fields.  Offenders can also work inside the facility participating in unit maintenance, landscaping, and laundry services.

Wynne Unit provide educational opportunities to offenders that include literacy, adult basic education, and the ability to earn a GED while incarcerated.  Vocational training is provided in welding, truck driving, computer maintenance technician, small engine repair, and diesel mechanics.  Inmates who suffer from drug and alcohol addiction have substance abuse education courses and support groups available to them.

Visiting Hours at Wynne Unit:

Inmates who are incarcerated at the Wynne Unit are allowed visitation on Saturdays and Sundays from 7am to 5pm.  All visits are two hours in duration unless you arrive after 3pm, in which case you will not have a full two hour visit.  Special four hour visits are available for anyone traveling over 300 miles to attend a visiting session, but they must first be approved by contacting the Warden's Office.  Visitors are allowed to bring up to $20 in quarters with them into visitation contained in a clear Ziploc bag to purchase items from the vending machines.  Visits can be contact or non-contact depending on the current status of the inmate.
