Coleman II United States Penitentiary
Coleman II United States Penitentiary is a high security penitentiary located in Sumterville, Florida. The facility is part of Sumter County and is one of the five facilities that make up the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex. The penitentiary currently holds 1400 inmates, all of which are male offenders. On average, the facility holds inmates that are from 20 - 78 years old. On average, an offender usually serves a 16 year term at the penitentiary. When constructed the bed capacity of Coleman II was designed to only hold 960 inmates. For housing, the facility has six different two-story buildings, each containing 128 cells.
In order to work towards their goal of making inmates law abiding citizens by the end of their term, Coleman II United States Penitentiary requires all offenders to take part in some sort of education. To do so, all new inmates must be tested on their previous knowledge so the education department can get a sense of the type of education each offender needs. Inmates who do not have their GED or a high school diploma will be enrolled in a GED program. All offenders may be educated with classes and programs on Monday through Friday. In addition, they may enroll in vocational classes such as business education, computer training, culinary arts, horticulture, cosmetology, and more. Parenting programs are also available along with programs for inmates who do not speak English as a first language. Inmates are also required to have a job around the facility and can take part in the eight apprenticeships Coleman II USP offers.
