Coleman I United States Penitentiary 

Coleman I United States Penitentiary is a high security prison that is part of the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex.  The facility is surrounded by a stun-lethal fence to ensure security of the compound.  USP Coleman I was created to be handicap accessible by both the staff, inmates, and visitors.  The facility was designed to carry up to 960 male offenders, however, the penitentiary currently holds 1,295 inmates.  Offenders serve a 19 year term at the penitentiary on average, and inmates range from 19-77 years old.  The prison takes up 90 of the 1600 acres that are encompassed by Coleman FCC.  Inmates are housed among six two-story buildings.  Every housing unit contains 128 cells that each house two prisoners.  

Coleman FCC requires all prisoners be proactive by taking advantage of both the educational programs and job opportunities that USP Coleman I has to offer.  Upon arrival, offenders will be tested by the education department and recommended to certain programs available by the prison.  Inmates who have not yet received their high school diploma or GED equivalent will be directed to a class that meets Monday through Friday and meets to help inmates acquire their GED.  USP Coleman I recommends that inmates involve themselves in other elective courses and vocational programs. These courses and programs revolve around the studies of horticulture, cosmetology, business education, custodial maintenance, HVAC, electrical, and culinary arts.

USP Coleman requires prisoners to have a job around the facility with the exception of those who have a valid certified medical excuse.  The prison has many jobs available.  Inmates who take work more seriously and have a better idea of what they want to involve themselves in may participate in one of the eight apprenticeship programs offered.  FCC Coleman works to prepare offenders for the world outside of prison, and strives to do their best to prepare inmates via educational and work experience.

Visiting Hours at Coleman I United States Penitentiary:

• Visiting at Coleman I United States Penitentiary is conducted on Sundays, Mondays, Saturdays, and federal holidays.
• After 2:00 P.M., visitors will no longer be admitted into the visiting room.
• Visits will be terminated as the visiting room crowds.  Volunteers will be asked to leave first and then visitors who have traveled less than 300 miles will be asked to leave. 
• Offenders are granted 7 visiting points per month.  Weekend visits and holiday visits will deduct 3 points, while weekday visits only deduct 1 point. 
• Unless the Warden grants otherwise, inmates are usually permitted up to 5 visitors at a tine.  This excludes children under the age of 2. 
• For prisoners who are a part of the Special Housing Unit, only non-contact visits will be allowed.  These visits can only last up to 2 hours and an inmate will not be able to see more than 2 visitors at a time. 
• Electronics are not permitted into the institution and should either be left in the car or placed in the lockers provided for the visitors by the prison.
• Money may be brought into the facility, however, the amount cannot exceed $20.00 and the bills shall not exceed five-dollar bills.  Money should be kept in a clear wallet or bag at all times.
