Lee United States Penitentiary

Lee United States Penitentiary is a high security penitentiary with a minimum security satellite camp located in Pennington Cap of Lee County, Virginia. The prison holds male offenders at both the USP and the camp. The penitentiary currently holds 1,277 prisoners while the camp is currently holding 81. The facilities at Lee United States Penitentiary offer numerous programs to their prisoners. These programs include education, spiritual practices, recreation, vocational training, psychological treatment, drug abuse counseling, and wellness programs. In addition to these programs, offenders are also assigned work. Work assignments include food services, mechanical services, health services, educational work, recreational work, laundry, or work for UNICOR. UNICOR is the prison textile factory that employs 200 inmates. Education at USP Lee includes GED, English as a Second Language, Adult Continuing Education, Post-Secondary Education, Parenting classes, Vocational apprenticeships, and Release Preparation.

Lee United States Penitentiary has had several notable inmates along with notable accidents that have occurred at the facility. For example, on February 25 in 2008, an inmate walked away from the facility. The prisoner, Edward Porta, was imprisoned for defraud of the U.S. Department of Agriculture of over $400,000. Porta walked away from the prison camp and was noticed missing later that day after the 4:00 P.M. count. Porta wasn't recaptured until May 2016 and was reported on the television program America's Most Wanted. Several homicides also occurred at the prison. Prisoner Quinten Corniel was killed in September of 2008 and inmate Ernest Bennett was killed in January of 2010. Both these deaths occurred during disputes with other inmates. In addition on April 29th, 2010 inmate Filikisi Hafoka, member of Tongan Crip Gang, was taken off life support after being stabbed the weekend before. These vents have caused USP Lee to go under lockdown several times.

Visiting Hours at Lee United States Penitentiary:

Visits to Lee United States Penitentiary are conducted on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays. For both the USP and Camp the visiting schedule is as follows:
- Fridays - 5:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.
- Saturdays - 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
- Sundays - 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
- Holidays - 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
New visitors will not be permitted in the facility after 2:00 P.M. on weekends / holidays and after 7:30 P.M. on Fridays.
An inmate can have up to 3 adult visitors at a time. Adult visitors are considered anyone who is 16 and older.
As the visiting room reaches its maximum capacity of 200 people, local visitors will be asked to leave to make room for new visitors.
Visitors are permitted to bring the following items into the facility:
- A clear bag no larger than 12 inches x 12 inches
- Up to $20.00
- Diaper bag for infants (will remain in Officer's station until bag is needed)
No outside food or drink is allowed in the visiting room. Vending machines are available for the use of visitors only.
Visitors who are 16 and older must have valid photo identification.
Storage lockers are available for visitor's belongings.
