Lexington Federal Medical Center is an administrative security medical center with a nearby minimum security prison camp.  FMC Lexington is located in Lexington of Fayette County, Kentucky. The prison sits on 302 acres, 37 acres of which are inside the security perimeter fence.  The facility holds both male and female offenders, currently holding 1,286 prisoners at the FMC and 245 prisoners at the Camp.  However, the facility was designed to have a maximum capacity of 1277 inmates at the FMC and 349 at the Camp. The prison camp is designed to house female offenders only.  The medical center provides medical, psychiatric, and surgical care to patients in need. The FMC consists of 5 general housing units and 2 medical units.  Each housing unit has basic hygiene furnishings, shower facilities, a TV area, and a multipurpose room.  Both the Camp and FMC provide a number of programs to offenders for their benefit.  These programs include a Residential Drug Abuse Program and the Dual Diagnosis Residential Drug Program.  Educational courses are also available.  Educational courses include the General Education Development program, English as a Second Language, Vocational Training, apprenticeships, Adult Continuing Education, Parenting classes, Release Preparation, and Post-Secondary Education.  Activities and other programs are available to prisoners through the Recreation Department.  The Recreation Department organizes crafts and sports activities to the inmates.  Prisoners can also participate in work through the Federal Prison Industires' UNICOR.  UNICOR gives inmates the opportunity to work in a Customer Service Center or an Electronics Factory.

FMC Lexington has been featured in several literature works such as Willam S. Burroughs' autobiography Junkie.  In Junkie, the main character checks himself into the FMC in attempt to quit his heroin addiction.  Both the author and his son were patients at FMC Lexington.  The facility was also featured in Nelson Algren's novel The Man with the Golden Arm and Alexander King's book Mine Enemy Grows Older.  The facility has also had several notable inmates, including Narseal Batiste.  Batiste was the leader of the Universal Divine Saviors religious cult.  Batiste was convicted of terrorism conspiracy in 2009 after he masterminded a plot to bomb the Sears Tower in Chicago.  Batiste was convicted along with 4 other co-conspirators.  Batiste served a 13 year sentence and was released in 2018.  Daniel Cowart is currently incarcerated at FMC Lexington.  Cowart is a white supremacist, best known for pleading guilty to planning the assassination of Barack Obama when running for president in 2008.  Cowart is currently serving his 14 year sentence and is expected to be released in 2021. 

Visiting Hours at Lexington Federal Medical Center:

  • To visit Lexington Federal Medical Center, a visitor must be on the inmate's approved visitors list.
  • Both inmates at the FMC and the Camp may be visited.  However, visiting schedules vary depending on whether a visitor is visiting an inmate from the FMC or the Camp.
  • FMC Visiting Schedule:
    • Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays - 2:25 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.
    • Saturdays, Sundays, Federal Holidays - 8:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
  • Camp Visiting Schedule:
    • Fridays - 5:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.
    • Saturdays, Sundays, Federal Holidays - 8:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
  • Prisoners are granted 12 visiting points per month.  The frequency of visits is based on a point system where weekday visits deduct 2 points and weekend/holiday visits deduct 4 points.  However, at the satellite camp only 1 point will be deducted for Friday visits.
  • Each inmate can have up to 5 visitors at a time, including children. 
  • The visiting room has an estimated capacity of 167 people.  As the visiting room overcrowds, visits will be terminated.  Typically local visitors will be the first asked to leave. 
  • All visitors who are 16 years of age and older are required to have photo identification present in order to visit.
  • Any visitor under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18.
  • Visitors could be subject to random search upon arrival to facility.
  • Physical contact such as handshaking, kissing, embracing is only allowed at the beginning and end of each visit.
  • Each visitor is allowed to bring up to $20.00 into the facility for the vending machines.  Visitors are also permitted to bring in 1 clear, gallon sized Ziploc plastic bag for storing any authorized items.
