Milan Federal Correctional Institution

Milan Federal Correctional Institution is a low security institution with a nearby detention center.  The prison is located in Milan of Washtenaw County, Michigan and takes up approximately 300 acres of land.  Currently housing 1,349 inmates, the prison holds male offenders only. Upon its original design, the FCI was designed to hold a maximum of 1,015 inmates and the FDC being designed to hold 162.  The FCI has 2 general housing units, 3 specialty housing units, 1 orientation housing unit, and 1 cadre unit.  At the FDC, the housing units are composed of typical cell rooms.  The prison first opened in 1933, where it was just known as a "Federal Detention Farm."  FCI Milan has gone through many changes since its activation.  From 1933 to 1939, Milan held female offenders.  The prison was formerly a medium security institution as well, however this changed in 1993.

The Education Department at Milan Federal Correctional Institution offers a variety of educational courses that inmates participate in.  Educational programs include General Education Development, Milan High School, Literacy Program, Adult Continuing Education, English as a Second Language, and the Parenting Program.  Milan High School is a program that allows prisoners to obtain a high school diploma.  In fact, FCI Milan is the only prison that has a diploma program.  The facility also provides religious services with two Chaplains where offenders are welcome to participate. Along with having a Residential Drug Abuse Program, the prison also offers a Restoring Independence and Stability for Everyone program.  The prison also contains a UNICOR operated metals factory.  This factory employs about 240 inmates.  The ultimate goal of Milan Federal Correctional Institution is to aid offenders into becoming law abiding citizens upon release.

On July 8th of 1938, the only execution ever at FCI Milan took place.  Anthony Chebatoris, guilty of murder and robbery, was hanged for the murder of Henry Porter.  Chebatoris is the only person to ever be executed inside Michigan since its admission to the Union.
