Johnston Correctional Institution

Johnston Correctional Institution is located in Smithfield North Carolina.  It is a minimum custody facility that houses 612 adult male inmates.  Offenders are housed in one of four dormitories.  Additionally this facility has 28 cells used for disciplinary and administrative segregation.  Throughout it's history, Johnston Correctional Institution has changed it's security level several times and in 2014 it officially became a minimum security prison.

Vocational classes in culinary arts, horticulture and masonry are offered through Johnston Community College.  Additionally, the college provides adult basic education courses and GED testing.  Inmates who have a high school diploma or GED can take a college correspondence course.  Offenders who are suffering from drug and alcohol dependency can receive substance abuse treatment, and attend Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

Visiting Hours at Johnston Correctional Institution:

All visits at Johnston Correctional Institution are by appointment only.  Appointments for visitation may be made by telephone between the hours of 9am-11am and 1pm-4pm by calling (919)-934-0549.  No appointments for visitation will be made by telephone on a Saturday.  The visiting hours are as follows:

• General Population inmates have visitation on:
  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from
    • 8:30am-10:30am
    • 1:30pm-3:30pm
  • Saturdays
    • 8:30am to 10:00am
    • 11:30am to 1:00pm
    • 2:00pm to 3:30pm
• Visitation is closed Sundays, Mondays, and State Holidays
