South Dakota State Penitentiary

South Dakota State Penitentiary is located in Sioux Falls South Dakota.  This facility houses approximately 690 adult male offenders.  This facility is also responsible for operating the Jameson Annex which is comprised of four housing units.  South Dakota State Penitentiary participates in the prison industries program and employs inmates in an upholstery shop, a sign and decal shop, a printing shop, manufacturing license plates, in a book bindery, and a machine shop.  Offenders can also work in supportive positions inside the prison providing custodial services, facility maintenance, and kitchen/culinary work.

South Dakota State Penitentiary provides mental health, dental and medical services to all inmates.  Additionally, inmates can receive substance abuse treatment and sex offender treatment/therapy.  Inmates who do not currently possess a diploma can take adult basic education courses, literacy and GED classes.  South Dakota State Penitentiary is home to some of the most dangerous and violent offenders in the state and is also where death row inmates are held.  Furthermore, this facility carries out death sentences in the state's only lethal injection execution chamber.

Visiting Hours at South Dakota State Penitentiary: 

Visitation at South Dakota State Penitentiary is based on the inmate's housing location.  The visiting schedule is as follows:

  • General Population Inmates
    • Monday-Friday from 5:20pm-8:30pm
    • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays also have visits from 12:30pm-3:15pm
    • ​Saturday and Sunday visitation occurs from 9am-11:30am and from 1:15pm-3:30pm
    • State recognized holidays that fall on weekdays have visits from 10:15am-12:45pm and from 1pm-3:20pm
  • Disciplinary Segregation Inmates
    • Are allowed a one hour non-contact visits only.  
    • Each visitor may visit once per week.
    • All visits for Disciplinary Segregation inmates must be scheduled one day in advance by calling (605)-367-5001.
    • Visits occur in two sessions.  The first session is from 12:30pm-1:40pm and the second session is from 1:50pm-3pm.
