Maintaining your relationship with someone who is incarcerated can be challenging.  Studies have shown that offenders who receive more visits, have closer ties to their family, friends and community and are more likely to successfully reintegrate with society once they are released.  To make the visiting process easier to understand and more accessible to everyone we have assembled the key things you need to know when visiting inmates incarcerated in Washington State prisons:

Sending Mail to Inmates in Washington

Inmates incarcerated in a prison in Washington State are allowed to send and receive correspondence.  All incoming mail must have a clear and legible return address in the upper left hand corner of the envelope, display the inmate's full name and ID number and the facilities address.  You should format the mail you send to an inmate as follows:

Wise Correctional Unit opened in 1964 and is a level 1 high facility located in Coeburn Virginia.  The facility is comprised of two dorms, two special housing units, a kitchen, dining hall, laundry facility, recreational area, classrooms, administration offices, library, commissary, visitation building, a maintenance shop, farm buildings, and five greenhouses.

Virginia Correctional Center for Women is level 2 prison located in Goochland Virginia.  It houses approximately 590 female inmates.  The facility was originally opened in 1931 and has since had several additional buildings added to it.  Virginia Correctional Center for Women is situated on 260 acres of land and is comprised of a total of 30 structures.

Sussex II State Prison is opened in 1999.  It is a level 4 facility that houses inmates with long sentences, usually life or multiple life sentences.  Additionally this facility houses inmates who have become difficult to manage at lower security levels and have since been moved up to a higher security.

Sussex I State Prison is a level 5 facility, which is just below maximum security, and is located in Waverly Virginia.  Inmates at this facility have long sentences, usually life or multiple life sentences.  This facility is located on the same property as Sussex II.  Sussex I State Prison houses 1,125 maximum security inmates, some of which are on death row.

St. Brides Correctional Center

St. Brides Correctional Center is a level 2 medium security facility located in Chesapeake Virginia.  This prison opened in 1973 and has received several upgrades and additions over the years with the latest occurring in 2008.  The facility is comprised of 14 housing units that can contain a maximum of 1,192 adult male inmates.

Rustburg Correctional Unit opened in 1969 and is a minimum security level 1 high prison located in Rustburg Virginia.  This facility houses a maximum of 153 inmates.  All offenders at this facility are employed and provide labor for the Department of Transportation cleaning highways and roads.
