Maintaining relationships and communication by visiting with friends and family members is one of the most important things in an inmates rehabilitation success.  All visitors are encouraged to use every opportunity they can to visit their inmate.  Before you visit, you will need to understand both the process of visitation, and the procedures you will need to follow to have a successful visit.  The following are some important things you need to know about visiting an inmate in California:

Inmates incarcerated in California may receive allowable items from anyone who is not currently incarcerated, or anyone who has not been released within the past year.  Anyone wishing to send an inmate a letter may do so, but the letter cannot contain anything that potential can put the safety and the security of the institution in jeopardy.  This would include letters that talk about escape, planning a criminal act, coded messages, hand drawn or printed maps, gang communications, or photos of a nude/sexual nature.

Avenal State Prison is a facility designed to house minimum to medium security inmates.  The facility itself is actually made up of six independent facilities, which are each given a letter name, and many buildings.  Avenal State Prison can hold an astounding 10,000 inmates, the size of a small town.

Wrightsville Unit is located in Pulaski County Arkansas.  The facility houses up to 950 medium to minimum security inmates.  This facility does not have an actual physical address but if you take Interstate 530 to exit 7 and go east to highway 365 you will see signs for the institution.

Varner Unit in Lincoln County Arkansas is the states only Super Max Facility.  Inmates at this correctional institution are under Super Max custody and some of the most dangerous and notorious inmates are held here.  The unit has a capacity of almost 1600 offenders, some of which are death row inmates.

Tucker Unit is located in Jefferson County Arkansas.  The facility houses minimum to medium custody level inmates.  Tucker unit can hold approximately 910 inmates at any given time and employs over 200 staff.

Pine Bluff Unit

Pine Bluff Unit is located in Jefferson County Arkansas.  The facility has a capacity of around 430 inmates and houses medium to minimum security offenders.  Offenders at this institution can be on work release which allows the inmate to work in the surrounding community in a normal job and then report back to the institution at the end of the work day.  To qualify for work release an inmate must meet certain criteria.

Ouachita River unit is an intake and classification facility located in Malvern Arkansas.  Almost all inmates in the state initially start at this facility and only stay for a few days to a few weeks to be classified and then moved on to their more permanent facility.  Because of this the institution houses inmates ranging from minimum to medium custody and often visitation is not possible due to the short duration of their stay.
