Louisiana State Penitentiary is located in Angola Louisiana.  It is the only fully maximum security institution in the state, housing over 6,300 adult males, over 85% of which are violent offenders.  In addition, over half of the inmates in this prison are serving life sentences.

Elayn Hunt Correctional Center is a maximum security prison located in St. Gabriel Louisiana.  The prison can house over 1,510 adult males, and acts as a diagnostics and classification center for approximately 400 inmates.  Although this is considered a maximum security institution, it houses inmates of all custody levels.

Dixon Correctional Institute is located in Jackson Louisiana.  It is a multi custody prison that houses minimum, medium and maximum security inmates.  This prison can hold approximately 1,600 inmates.  Over half of the inmates housed at Dixon Correctional Institute are considered violent offenders, most are serving a sentence of over 20 years.

David Wade Correctional Center is located in Homer Louisiana.  It can house approximately 1,244 inmates of minimum, medium and maximum custody.  Offenders are housed in various units depending on their security needs.  The prison is comprised of four dormitories, a special management unit, a disciplinary unit, and a transitional dormitory.

Avoyelles Correctional Center is located in Cottonport Louisiana.  It is a mixed custody institution that houses minimum, medium and maximum security inmates.  Inmates are able to participate in educational courses that include adult basic education and the ability to earn a diploma through the GED program.

When a friend or someone you love becomes incarcerated it can strain your relationship.  Often times people loose touch or don't visit because they don't know the process and are overwhelmed at the thought of going to a correctional institution.  To make visiting more straight forward and easier for everyone we have amassed the most important things should know before you visit your inmate in Louisiana:

Sending Mail to Inmates in Louisiana

Inmates can receive letters and standard sized greeting cards from friends and family members.  The cards may not be electronic or musical.  Offenders can also receive 4"x6" photos as long as they are not instant/Polaroid as these pose a security risk.  No photos can contain nudity or depict illegal activities.  Hand gestures and pictures of tattoos are also prohibited as they can be misconstrued as gang symbols. You should never send cash, stamps or any other items in the mail as they will be rejected or confiscated.
